This paper analyzes a media case centered on Gabriel Petersson, an engineer at OpenAI, featured on a mainstream Vietnamese news channel in early 2026. Through the lens of cognitive neuroscience (DMN–TPN), ideological marketing, and knowledge-power theory, this study argues that the article functions as a political–technological marketing text rather than a neutral educational account. By valorizing the “dropout-success-through-AI” narrative, the coverage risks inducing cognitive paralysis in the general population, particularly among children and adolescents, and establishes a new hierarchy of cognition in the AI era.

1. Fact-Checking and Media Structure

The publication of Petersson’s story on a mainstream Vietnamese channel is deliberate. It exemplifies an Anchoring Story designed to normalize a new standard of thought:

Traditional education is less important than mastering technological tools.

Empirically, Petersson is real and currently employed at OpenAI. However, the media narrative commits a critical causal fallacy by attributing his success to ChatGPT, rather than recognizing it as a means utilized by an individual with exceptional personal foundations.

This strategy replicates a familiar survivorship bias: the media highlights an outlier to persuade the average audience that similar results are achievable through the same tools, while excluding thousands of unsuccessful cases.

2. Cognitive Neuroscience Analysis: The DMN–TPN Trade-Off

Petersson describes his learning methodology as beginning with specific problems, learning through practice, and returning to theory afterward. Neurocognitively, this approach heavily activates the Task-Positive Network (TPN), optimizing goal-directed problem-solving and output efficiency.

If we consider mental health as the capacity for self-governance and reflection, the contemporary world suffers an epidemic of Humanistic–Ethical Cognitive Paralysis. Populations lie on the “beds” of convenience, allowing algorithms to deliver ephemeral dopamine and AI to think for them on fundamental issues. The most evident symptom is DMN erosion: individuals perform tasks efficiently (TPN) but lose self-awareness and purpose.

Observers face a paradox: in a system that believes it is healthy, those providing accurate diagnoses are often labeled paranoid. Dependence is framed as “symbiosis,” and dropping out to leverage AI is celebrated as “democratization of knowledge.”

6. Conclusion

The media coverage of Gabriel Petersson is not neutral; it is a political–technological marketing narrative designed to normalize AI dependence and obscure systemic risks. The potential consequence is a new cognitive hierarchy: a minority controlling tools and foundational knowledge dominates, while the majority gradually loses the capacity for high-level independent thought.

The final assessment is a warning: trading the arduous cultivation of the brain for algorithmic convenience is not progress—it is the relinquishment of human cognitive sovereignty.
